A global leader in professional services, Deloitte sought to revamp its full-floor meeting and reception area into a green, low-carbon space making it the only space in China to achieve four prestigious certifications: LEED Platinum, WELL Platinum, BREEAM Excellent, and Zero Carbon Space certification.

DB&B: Deloitte aimed to transform its Shanghai office’s conference and reception area, incorporating local Shanghai elements and its distinct brand culture. This ambitious initiative aims to create a green, low-carbon space that fosters collaboration while prioritising energy efficiency and eco-friendliness. By integrating health-conscious concepts, the new design aligns with Deloitte’s commitment to their Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) policies and sustainable development.

Rhythm of Light and Shadow

The design features customised grille light strips that symbolise the passage of time and Deloitte’s century-old heritage along the Huangpu River. The futuristic front desk, with its slanted and 3D design, breaks conventional norms, offering visitors and employees an unobstructed view of the river for a stunning visual experience.

Vertical grilles and an irregular ceiling that create a captivating interplay of light and shadow as sunlight filters through. This dynamic interaction between the grilles and sunlight produces ever-changing patterns, enhanced by green elements that symbolise Deloitte’s energetic and diverse corporate culture. Inspired by the concept of “Rhythm (Green) of Light and Shadow,” the design cleverly plays on the Chinese homophones for “green” and “rhythm,” embodying a vibrant synergy between nature and innovation.

An integrated LED screen displays real-time energy consumption and environmental data, highlighting the space’s energy-saving and emission reduction efforts. This system intelligently adjusts lighting based on ambient light levels, achieving a remarkable reduction in energy consumption by over 20%.

Bridging Heritage and Modernity

The expansive green wall with a triangular bay motif pay homage to the rich history of Puxi on one side and the modern vibrancy of Lujiazui on the other, centred around the Huangpu River. This design embodies Shanghai’s inclusive spirit, harmonising the traditional charm of Puxi with the contemporary allure of Pudong.

Zero-Carbon Conference Room

The conference rooms are carefully crafted, with DB&B transforming the spacious area into a zero-carbon environment. Classified as Carbon Neutral or “Net Zero” emissions, this design approach utilises plants and eco-friendly elements to offset the carbon dioxide emissions generated during use. The concept of carbon neutrality has emerged as a global trend in sustainable development, highlighting a commitment to environmental responsibility.

Pioneering Excellence

Deloitte’s Shanghai office stands out as the only space in China to achieve four prestigious certifications: LEED Platinum, WELL Platinum, BREEAM Excellent, and Zero Carbon Space certification. In recognition of its innovative design and sustainability efforts, the office was also awarded the MUSE Design Award (Silver) in 2024, highlighting its commitment to excellence in creating a healthy and environmentally responsible workplace.
