Conexus Studio’s Kuala Lumpur office blurs the line between studio and showcase — a crafted environment where experimentation, culture, and everyday work unfold as one continuous experience.
Conexus Studio | There is a certain energy in spaces that are designed not just to function, but to prove a point. Conexus Studio’s first office in Malaysia is one of them. Conceived as a Living Lab, the space is less a traditional workplace and more an evolving prototype — a place where ideas are tested in real time and where design excellence is measured by how it performs throughout the workday, from morning meetings to late-evening conversations.

Layered spaces and tunable smart lighting empower staff to personalise their environment throughout the workday.
In an era shaped by conversations around hybrid models and productivity, the project poses a quieter question: What does good work feel like? The answer begins the moment you step inside.
A Space That Redefines Work
At the heart of the office is The Commune — the front-of-house social hub that sets the tone for the entire experience. Warm textures, lush greenery, and a hospitality-inspired reception dissolve any sense of corporate rigidity.

A striking communal table and sculptural pendant anchor the library space, adding inviting warmth and visual drama.
Designed as a highly adaptable social nucleus, The Commune shifts seamlessly throughout the day — from a relaxed work café and informal meeting ground to a workshop venue or town hall setting. Its spatial flexibility allows it to support focused work, spontaneous collaboration, client presentations, and after-hours gatherings with equal ease.
From here, the office unfolds in layers. Social zones transition into collaborative settings, which in turn give way to focused work areas, forming a carefully choreographed journey. Openness is balanced with intimacy; energy with calm. The spatial choreography avoids abrupt shifts in line, curve, and material, favouring a seamless progression that mirrors the cadence of a working day.

Warm ochre hues and lush greenery create a welcoming reception experience inspired by boutique hospitality.
Beneath the relaxed ambience lies rigorous intention. Darius Chin, Conexus Studio’s Country Head, observes: “When design is intentional, it does more than accommodate work — it shapes how people connect, collaborate, and grow. Culture is cultivated through spaces that align people, purpose, and possibility.”
That belief transforms the office into something more than a place of operations. It becomes a demonstration — a work-and-experience gallery where business partners come together to innovate, and clients encounter, firsthand, how strategy translates into space.

Where collaborative energy meets creative ambition, the Conexus Studio office becomes a stage for shared ideas.
Architecting Agility
Adaptability is embedded into the architecture itself. Mobile, modular furniture allows the front-of-house to shift seamlessly from work-café to workshop venue or town hall setting. Technology enhances this fluidity: lighting is fully customisable, where each layer can be adjusted in both intensity and colour temperature to suit mood and task. Personal lockers offer flexibility too; they can be unlocked by app or by pin, according to user preference.
The space maintains a balance between openness and focus. Acoustic panels double as design elements, while material transitions — such as shifts from hard floors to soft textiles — quietly absorb excess sound. Power distribution avoids visual clutter; instead of intrusive floor boxes, mobile energy units discreetly support devices, reinforcing a sense of freedom to work where inspiration strikes.

Modular furnishings and mobile power units enable seamless transitions from daily work to large-scale events.
Material as Narrative
There is also a thoughtful dialogue with Conexus Studio’s Singapore headquarters. Shared design DNA — such as material language, spatial concepts such as the library and event-centric planning — creates continuity, while local materials assert a uniquely Malaysian identity.
Locally sourced terrazzo grounds the environment in context, while 3D-printed tiles reinterpret the country’s island formations through abstract patterns — geography translated into texture. A handmade woven artwork, created by the team, layers sky, rainforest, and archipelago into a textured landscape, blending craft tradition with contemporary experimentation.

Affectionately named The Commune, this social hub shifts effortlessly from dynamic morning work-café to lively evening gatherings.
Craftsmanship is where the Living Lab ethos is most visible — and most invisible. Curves appear in unexpected places, echoing the building’s organic form. Overhead, a recessed sweep draws the eye toward a stretched membrane lighting feature that emits a soft, diffused glow. Achieving that visual calm required intense coordination: navigating mechanical and electrical services, concealing air diffusers, and utilising precise prefabrication to maintain a seamless ceiling line.
In the boardroom, a 3.3-metre whiteboard — too large for the building’s lift — was carefully transported up staircases to preserve the design’s uninterrupted form. It is the kind of hidden effort that few visitors will notice, yet it speaks volumes about the commitment to craft.
Ultimately, the Conexus Studio office demonstrates that progressive workplace thinking need not remain conceptual. It can be practical, crafted, and measurable. This is not an office that merely speaks about collaboration, flexibility, or culture. It embodies them — daily and convincingly.
We don’t design offices to follow trends — we design them to challenge assumptions. Every project is a laboratory for bold ideas and new ways of working. But innovation isn’t about novelty; it’s about creating environments that elevate brands, strengthen collaboration, and help teams deliver results consistently. When space is designed with intention, it becomes a competitive advantage.
