Designed by BAX, DCB Montana transforms Ljubljana’s skyline, showcasing modern architectural principles and sustainability while establishing a dynamic business hub that encourages collaboration and enhances connectivity within the urban landscape.

The DCB Montana office building marks the first significant step in transforming the Moste industrial zone into a dynamic business district in Ljubljana, the Slovenian capital. As a key element in converting this area into a business park, DCB Montana represents a pivotal development. The architects at BAX, the creators of this project, recognized this potential and have prioritized raising local standards in urban planning, architecture, and sustainability. Their approach aligns with the flexibility required by modern workspaces and aims to enrich the surrounding environment by enhancing its connection to public spaces.

The project commenced in September 2019, following the announcement of the winner of an international competition for urban and architectural design. This competition, organized by invitation by the Slovenian company Dimnikcobau, sought a design that would be recognized as one of the most innovative business centers in Central Europe. BAX, a studio led by architects Boris Bežan and Mónica Juvera, won the competition. With 20 years of international experience, their Barcelona-based team brought a visionary approach to the project.

Inaugurated in September 2024, DCB Montana stands as the first and most iconic business building in the area, covering 20,670 m². A second phase will introduce an additional block, further expanding office and warehouse spaces. Designed to foster dynamic collaboration, the building offers a variety of interaction spaces while ensuring exceptional energy efficiency and environmental responsibility.

Each of its 10 floors accommodates four office units, all featuring flexible configurations that allow occupants to combine or expand their spaces as needed. The inclusion of extensive terraces with panoramic views of the city and surrounding nature, alongside a restaurant, café, meeting rooms, and a multifunctional gallery for events, contributes to a harmonious workspace. A central atrium enhances the flow of natural light and optimizes ventilation, further improving the building’s functionality.

One of the greatest challenges in designing DCB Montana was creating a structure with a strong identity that transforms the space. The architects addressed this by positioning two corners of the building diagonally, a subtle yet effective design move that introduces dynamic geometry. The rhomboid shape connects the building to the public space, featuring garden micro-environments bordered by serpentine benches. These design choices establish a dialogue with the surroundings, both at ground level and through formal architectural elements that unify the complex.

The building’s iconic facade features two large openings that provide fresh perspectives of the city. This striking feature not only creates a dramatic visual impact but also allows an abundance of natural light to flood the interior.

From its inception, DCB Montana was designed to be one of the first sustainable office buildings in Slovenia. Its energy-efficient solutions not only reduce consumption but also enhance the daily experience of those working in and visiting the building by fostering an open and connected atmosphere. As a result, DCB Montana has earned DGNB Gold certification and an A1 energy rating, setting new benchmarks for sustainability in office architecture.
